Is Your Boat Really Ready for the Water — The Northwoods Spring Launch Checklist

Spring Is Here — But Is Your Boat?

The Northwoods winter is long, and by the time the ice goes out on the Minocqua chain, most boat owners are ready to get back on the water. But a few quick checks before your first launch can mean the difference between a great opening day and an unexpected headache at the ramp.

At Minocqua Lakeside, spring is our busiest season for a reason. After 30 years servicing boats in the area, we know exactly what tends to show up after a Wisconsin winter. Here is what to look for before you head out.

The Battery

Wisconsin winters are hard on batteries. After months in storage, even a battery that was healthy in October may need attention before its first start. Give it a full charge and check the terminals for any corrosion buildup. If it is showing its age or you are not confident in it, replacing it before the season starts is always the smarter call. Don’t let a faulty battery stop you from enjoying a great summer day.

The Fuel System

Fuel that has been sitting since fall behaves differently than fresh gas, especially in the Northwoods where many boats go untouched for five or six months. Check your fuel lines for any cracking or wear, and inspect the filter if it has not been replaced in a while. When starting up after a long winter, a faint fuel smell might occur during the first run: that is common as the system clears out. But if it is strong or persistent, it is worth flagging before you head out.

Fluids, Hull, and Bilge

A quick walk-around goes a long way. Check your engine oil and look over the lower unit. Scan the hull for any new cracks or blistering that might have developed over winter storage. Test the bilge pump before you need it on the water, and make sure the drain plug and its gasket are in good shape and ready to seat correctly on launch day. These are small things that Northwoods boaters learn to check every spring.

The Trailer

The road between your storage facility and the Minocqua-area launches can be hard on a trailer that has been sitting all winter. Check your tires for pressure and tread, spin the wheels to listen for any bearing issues, and run through all your lights before you hitch up. A quick check at home saves a lot of trouble on the road.

Safety Gear

Wisconsin requires a Coast Guard-approved life jacket for every person on board, a throwable flotation device on boats 16 feet and longer, and a working fire extinguisher. Spring is the right time to check expiration dates on flares, test your navigation lights, and restock your first aid kit. It takes fifteen minutes and it sets you up for the whole season.
