Which Boat Rental Is Right for Your Group — Pontoon vs. Ski Boat vs. Fishing Boat

The Most Common Question We Get, Answered
Every season, one of the first questions we hear from guests planning a lake day in Minocqua is simple: which boat should we book? It is a fair question, and the right answer really does depend on your group. After 30 years on these lakes, we have helped a lot of families, friend groups, and first-time renters figure it out. Here is the straightforward breakdown.
Pontoon: Best for Groups, Families, and Relaxed Days on the Water
The pontoon is the most popular rental we offer, and for good reason. It is spacious, stable, and comfortable for a wide range of groups, from families with young kids to multi-generational cabin trips where everyone wants to be on the water together.
If your group is looking for a relaxed day of cruising the Minocqua chain, finding a good spot to anchor, or simply enjoying the Northwoods scenery with room to spread out, the pontoon is the right call. Our pontoon fleet includes larger and smaller options depending on your group size, and all are easy to operate for renters of any experience level.
One thing to keep in mind: pontoons are not designed for watersports. If tubing or wakeboarding is on the agenda, the ski boat is what you need.
Ski Boat: Best for Watersports and Active Days
Our ski boat rentals are powerful, responsive, and ideal for smaller, activity-focused groups who want to get the most out of their time on the water.
This is a great fit for groups of friends or families with older kids who are ready for a more active lake day. It works best when everyone on board is invested in the activity rather than a mixed group where half the crew wants to relax and the other half wants to go fast.
Fishing Boat: Best for Anglers and Early Mornings
The Minocqua area is known for some of the best fishing in northern Wisconsin, and our fishing boat rentals are purpose-built to help you make the most of it. Lightweight and easy to maneuver, the fishing boat gets you into the smaller launches and quieter coves where walleye, bass, and northern pike tend to be.
This option is ideal for smaller groups, two to five people, who are there specifically to fish. It is the right tool if you are heading out early before the lake gets busy and want a focused, no-frills experience on the water.
The Short Version
If you are bringing a larger group and want a comfortable, relaxed day on the Northwoods lakes, go with the pontoon. If watersports are the main event and your crew is on the smaller side, the ski boat is your answer. And if fishing is the goal, the fishing boat will put you in the right spots.
